Remembering Legendary Rapper Nottorious BIG 27 Years After His Assassination

By Presta, 9 March 2024

On this solemn day, March 9th, 1997, the music world was struck by tragedy as Christopher Wallace, fondly remembered as Notorious B.I.G. or Biggie Smalls, met his untimely demise. Merely a day after facing disheartening booing at the ’97 Soul Train Music Awards on March 8th, he fell victim to a fatal shooting.

Biggie’s death was perceived as a retaliation, a grim echo of the bitter feud with his rival, Tupac Shakur. The tensions escalated following Tupac’s fatal shooting in 1996, allegedly orchestrated in retaliation for a prior attack on Tupac himself in New York.

Tupac’s demise left a chasm of unresolved grievances, fueling a rivalry that would become legendary in the annals of hip-hop history.

The Late Nottorious BIG

Despite hopes of reconciliation after Tupac’s passing, the animosity persisted. Biggie’s appearance at the Soul Train Awards was met with a chilling reception, foreshadowing the tragedy that awaited him. In a drive-by shooting that fateful March 9th, Biggie’s life was cut short at the tender age of 24.

Notably, our own esteemed rapper, Esir, drew inspiration from Notorious in his artistry. In a poignant twist of fate, both Esir and Biggie shared birth and death months, their promising careers tragically truncated at the age of 22 and 24, respectively.

Their shared fate, underscored by the eerie coincidence of both perishing in vehicular incidents, serves as a somber reminder of the fragility of life and the enduring legacy of two rap icons.

As we honor the memory of Notorious B.I.G. on the anniversary of his passing, let us reflect on his profound influence on hip-hop culture and the indelible mark he left on the hearts of music lovers worldwide. Rest in peace, Biggie Smalls.
