Ryan Ichanghai’s Homecoming: Strengthening Ties with Kenya and Shaping the Future of Fashion
By Presta, 10 September 2024
Ryan Ichanghai, the visionary behind the UK-based streetwear brand KIROHO is preparing for a special visit to his home country of Kenya this December.
Known for his unique designs and global appeal, Ichanghai aims to connect with his Kenyan roots and explore new opportunities for collaboration that reflect Kenyan culture.
This trip is not just a homecoming, but an important step in deepening his connection with his heritage and building relationships with the local creative community.
Although KIROHO’s current designs don’t fully reflect Kenyan culture, Ichanghai plans to change that. His FAUTI hoodie, inspired by the Swahili word “tofauti” (meaning contrast), is one example of how he incorporates subtle elements of his heritage into his designs.
In the future, he hopes to create more pieces directly inspired by Kenyan culture, highlighting the country’s rich artistic traditions.
For Ichanghai, one of the main goals of this visit is to engage with local artists and explore collaborations with traditional craftsmen, including those specializing in beadwork, textiles, and indigenous art.
By doing so, he hopes to bring authentic Kenyan elements into his designs while offering local talent a platform on the global stage.
Ichanghai’s ambitions don’t end with fashion alone. He envisions KIROHO as a brand that bridges cultures, with its success in the UK elevating both Kenyan fashion and culture. Balancing the two worlds is a priority for him, as he believes both are essential to the identity of his brand.
As he looks forward to his homecoming, Ichanghai hints at a special project in December, one that will give back to the country that raised him. This visit is shaping up to be a milestone in his career and a defining moment for the future of Kenyan fashion.
